Experience Trick or Treating at Mount Vernon | Oct 27

Chocolate. Sweets. Wagon Rides. The key elements to any fun, outdoor Halloween party. Throw in carding and spinning wool, fishnet making demonstrations, and 18th-century dancing, and you have the makings of a great time Trick or Treating at Mount Vernon. Featuring character actors, living history and cultural demonstrations, and a very special scavenger hunt, Saturday, October 27, promises to be a Halloween for the history books and one of most fun October events in DC!

Revolutionary Costumes when Trick or Treating at Mount Vernon

Open to all ages, guests are encouraged to come in Revolutionary-era costumes (though all costumes are welcome). Candy will be provided for trick or treaters, and special prizes will be awarded throughout the evening for the best Martha and George Washington costumes. During the festivities you can mingle with character actors who will be demonstrating traditional arts and crafts, games, and October events in DC of a 1700’s era plantation. Make a beautiful Halloween-themed craft, go for a wagon ride on the scenic 12-acre grounds of Mount Vernon, or head to the upper garden and learn traditional 18th century dance moves with Martha Washington; whatever you choose, just don’t miss the adorable toddler costume parade!

Mount Vernon Comes To Life

In addition to Trick or Treating at Mount Vernon, the local farmers and artisans from Pioneer Farm and the in-character docents at Mount Vernon will be on hand to show you the ins and outs of plantation life in the 18th century. Observe chocolate making close up (and more importantly, taste-test the results), or learn how wool was harvested from sheep and carded and spun into beautiful textiles. You can even learn what carding is! The scavenger hunt on the estate grounds is fun for all ages, especially as teams of goblins and ghouls are unleased across the rolling hills on their quest for the special Halloween prizes.

The Trick or Treating event takes place rain or shine, so please come prepared. Tickets may be purchased in advance online and are $14 for adults and $8 for youths 11 and under. Members of the Mount Vernon Society can purchase them beginning September 10, while general public sales begin on September 17.
